Ode to Stars. And Palindromes.

Palindrome (2005-06) from Malcolm Sutherland on Vimeo.

Haizee's Ode to Stars

Play the video and mp3 together, with the video sound turned down to 1 bar and Haizee turned up all the way.

Malcolm Sutherland's "Palindromes" is a multimedia installation that is meant to be projected on the bottom of an Olympic-sized diving pool.

My song "Ode to Stars" was inspired by an article I read this week about the music that stars emit. The sounds, which travels light years to Earth, give scientist an idea of the size and shape of the star. The "music" they emit is similar to the ocean sound you hear in a sea shell.

I Wonder

My experiments with remixing classic movies continue, with the 1955 film "Guys and Dolls", starring Marlon Brando. I've never seen the film, but Marlon's raspy, melodic voice grabbed me when I discovered this clip on You Tube.

Runners in Love

Haizee's Runners in Love"

Logan's Run is a novel written by William F. Nolan and George Clayton Johnson in the late 1960's, about a futuristic society in which the human population and the consumption of resources are maintained in equilibrium by requiring that every person by killed at the age of 30.

The story follows Logan, an assassin that must track down and kill every runaway thirty-something. Ironically, Logan ends up running himself once he turns 30.

One of the most interesting aspects of this story line to me is that most of the action happens on roller skates, my favorite mode of transportation.

I created a spooky, yet bouncy, sound-scape to meant to evoke the deadly roller-disco lifestyle Logan has to survive, combined with Deee-Lite's classic "What Is Love".

How You Touch Me

I was surfing Youtube yesterday and stumbled across the 1941 classic Little Foxes, starring Bette Davis.

The film is set in the early 20th century, with Davis playing a Southern aristocrat named Regina Hubbard Giddens. Regina comes from a wealthy family, but is not given an inheritance because at that time only sons were considered legal heirs. Bummer. As a result, her brothers Benjamin and Oscar are loaded while she has to depend on her loser husband Horace for money, who has heart trouble.

The cold heartlessness of the scene struck me, and I thought, maybe people can dance to this.

Notice the crazy death stare that begins at 1:12. Pure evil!

A Summer Wind Came Blowin' In

I've been a little bit obsessed with Frank Sinatra these days. I know that's not an unusual statement as pretty much the entire universe has been obsessed with old blue eyes for the past 50 years.

I took my fascination to an electronic level and took a sample from "A Very Good Year" and mashed it up with some sounds I made in Garageband and a few contemporary remixes. Enjoy.

The Prodigal Haizee has Returned

Have mercy, my months long blogging sabbatical is officially over.

The past few months have been spent in total Ableton and Garageband immersion. A rewarding experience, but with bad repercussions for my blogging schedule.

Here's the latest installation; a dub remix of Alicia Key's "Unthinkable". It takes the original and dips it in filtered space disco.

Haizee's Endless Possibilities Mix

I've been getting more and more intimate with Garageband over the past few weeks. The endless possibilities are exciting.

Here is the end result of Garageband plus Ableton plus lots of late night espresso lattes. This mix is a synthesis of my original tracks with the likes of Kris Menace, Claude von Stroke, the Sounds and Everything but the Girl.

It kind of feels like Super Mario Brothers on acid to me, but others don't see the connection.

What do you think?

Marvin and Tammi go Tribal

I've recently been exploring the wonderful world of Garageband. It's a fairly amazing production tool, and if you download the various expansion packs, you can literally have over 35,000 samples and loops at your fingertips. Are you feeling sufficiently dorky? I hope so.

Motown seemed like a logical place to start these experiments. It's pretty much impossible to mess up the likes of Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell.

This is a work-in-progress - stay tuned to hear the progression.
